The Valve Corporation is an American video game development company based in Bellevue, Washington, USA that was founded in 1996, and made famous by its first product, Half-Life, which was released in November 1998.

Let's be fair, if you haven't heard of Valve, Steam, or at the very least the half life series then you've been living on mars.

In 2002, Valve unleashed there steam delivery service on the world, starting as a patching service for online games, it grew into a huge success and has evolved into a mind boggling hub of game distribution for third parties, online servers, and of course their own collection of excellent games. There is also a thriving community which the valve staff also take an active part in.

Steam will keep track of everything that you have received from them, ensuring that if your hard drive gets wiped, or you somehow lose your steam install, all you have to do is re-install steam and it will re-download all your games and demos for you. I can testify to this, as i have lost a drive and the re-install of steam was painless (unlike replacing all the rest of what i lost )
